The Proclaimer Needlepoint Design - one of the Four Central Motifs from the Trades of Talavera Needlework Collection - is available as Needlepoint Kits and Canvases. We refer to this painting as - The Reveler - in our studio.
Dressed in historical country peasant fashion of the Seventeenth Century - The Proclaimer - or Reveler - could be also named The Town Crier.
The Spanish have never *marketed* their ceramic treasures ( or other ) - yet all know these trades paintings - their proper tiles and which are painted by which school of artisans.
We love the MET website.
Using nineteen different colors - each area of this design - was painfully developed by translating painted strokes into constrained dots of colored fibers until successfully reproducing the appearance of a painted tile into yarn.
The touches of tangerine are a perfect example of triangulation - so important in classical compositions. The balanced stance of the Proclaimer within a relaxed body tension - draws any observer into his inside world.
The very pale peach - yellow and ancient blue background and sky colors were successfully dyed to reproduce the luminosity of the Talavera paints. The stylized clouds repeat the four shades of blues found in the Proclaimer*s shirt.
Carefully adding a bit more perspective to this tile painting - gave a nice dimension - while retaining the original naive effect.
