Another important Historical Trade - traditionally - the Weaver was always a man using the hand constructed looms - very beautifully creations on their own.

Historical Needlepoint - The Weaver

Azulejos - the term in Spain for tiles - is from arabic az-zulaiŷ - meaning glazed earthenware. Their presence has been instrumental in the aesthetics of the Spanish-Moorish architecture and the Hispanic - Muslim art in general - highlighting its evolution in the Mudejar and the Portuguese and Spanish earthenware since way before the eighteenth century.

Today - needlepoint is considered a woman*s art - yet historically - any weaving was solely performed by men.

A great stress reliever - Needlepoint is ideal for men or women and a brilliant pastime for children. We are pleased to see more men visiting our shops and acquiring Needlepoint Designs for their working.

When we first designed the Trades of Talavera Tapestry in 1996 - we decided to position the figures looking away from each other. The volumes of The Countrywoman and The Weaver were greater - thus we put them on opposing positions to balance the four joined motifs comfortably to the eye.
